I bought my Breitling watch it about 7 years ago and wear it almost everyday. Despite the wear almost every day, having gone diving with it, kiteboarded with her and traveled around Australia, Scandinavia and the Far East, it now seems as good as the day I purchased.
In all honesty, I had never heard of Breitling watches until I went to a store to buy a Tag Heuer – everyone I knew seemed to have a label and it seemed that the ideal watch that could be worn both formally and the sport. Anyway, while I was in the store looking at the Tag collections, the assistant said that if I wanted Tag, I could also be interested in Breitling.
Well, it was love at first sight. I know not everyone will like Breitling watches. During I think that they are beautiful, I can understand why some would not take a taste. They are not as 'rounded' as others, such as a label or second. Although stylish, they have some older, harder-edged style to them. I learned later that most collections of Breitling watches were designed 50 years ago and, despite some changes to the movements and minor cosmetic changes, they are pretty much the wristwatch as they were 50 years ago.
The Shadow Flyback I bought equipped with a movement ETA 2892-A2 mechanical. The movement is a chronograph, is automatic and has a flyback complication. Most second hand stopwatch can be stopped then reset with a flyback complication the second hand can be reset without stopping the timer – it continues to run from the zero position. The power reserve of the movement is 42 hours.
Like all watches in the Breitling Windrider collection, the bezel is raised and is unidirectional – it is not a diver watch where the bezel is unidirectional. However, the watch is water resistant to 100mm – I've been with this watch diving to a depth of 20 meters and I can attest to its tightness.
Although the dial comes in a few colors, the one I bought is a very dark blue that seems black except in solar radiation. There are 3 subdials, second hand, 10-minute interval and 3 hour intervals. The subdials are the same color the dial and are set in a configuration compax sorting, which means they are set to 3, 6 and 9 o'clock position. The opening date is between 4 and 5 o'clock marker. I like it that it is most unusual in the Windrider collection, watches, most others come with counters located at 6, 9 and 12 o'clock position to the opening date on the marker for 3 hours.
The hour markers are just that: there are no figures giving it a sophisticated look, I think. Markers and hour and minute hand are luminous as is the tip of the stopwatch seconds hand. Incidentally, the stopwatch second hand is nicely counterbalanced with the logo "B" Breitling ".
Finally, this Breitling watch is available in stainless steel, 18K gold or two tone. Mine is stainless steel (steel, the best result) and comes with a wrist watch better than you can possibly buy, the strap of the pilot of a slight diagonal chunky rectangular links really are very attractive.
As I said I had the Shadow Flyback for 7 years and apart from some minor scratches on the clasp it is not a mark on him. Since then, buy it I became a big fan of Breitling watches and it was my intention when I save enough money to buy the Navitimer Comsonaute – another beautiful timepiece.
